Access Measures: Active Listening

What is active listening?

Active Listening is a supportive, compassionate and empathetic relationship between two people who have lived experiences in common. Those experiences can be that of one's own mental illness, addiction, or that of loved one(s). The commonality might not be to a specific challenge or experience but rather to the emotional pain that can accompany these shared feelings. The empowerment, hope and resources that come from a person who has been in their shoes can help navigate complicated and confusing feelings and feel less alone in the challenges. Connecting with another person who has had similar lived experiences can be a vital link for someone struggling with their own situation.

Active Listening has been widely used within the context of clinical mental health recovery programs but is making its way into the broader community. Access to mental health care and treatment is not always accessible, and active listening is one way to break through that barrier. Often artists are folks living in precarious financial situations and can face more barriers to accessing care. Offering support to artists working in festivals can support their mental health and well-being in what can be a stressful and challenging time. Sometimes, the content of the show itself can stir up upsetting feelings and having a person with a shared identity or experience can support the artistic practice and create a safer rehearsal and performance space for all artists.

Active Listeners will be available for audience members, staff, artists and volunteers at Next Stage each day of the festival. Active listeners are there to provide compassionate, empathetic and confidential support during or following a performance. Additional mental health resources can be provided if requested.

When is it available?

Every day of the festival, an active listener is available online or in person at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.

How does online/virtual active listening work?

If you would like to chat with someone from the comfort of your own space, active listeners are available for phone calls, emails and video chats. Email/text/call Jules (community@fringetoronto.com) OR the person scheduled for a virtual shift (posted daily on our social media), and they will get back to you about how to connect.

How does in-person work?

If you would like to talk to the active listener available, they will be floating around with a lanyard on that says Active Listener. If you can't find them, check in with a staff member; they can point out the person available or how to contact someone.

What if I need to talk to someone but don't want to use this service?
