80 minutes

Meet Siranoush, a 19th century Armenian actress who crossed continents to become the first female in the non-western world to play Hamlet, disrupting the image of a woman of her time. In 21st century Toronto, Lara wants to know what that means for her, as she tries to balance motherhood, artistry and breaking out of the ‘ethnic actor box’. In an attempt to reconnect more deeply with her heritage, she reimagines Siranoush’s journey.

Back from a sold-out run, this visceral one-woman show asks: How does the power of theatre bring us 'home'?

More about the show and company

CorpoLuz Theatre is dedicated to developing and staging interdisciplinary, intercultural and multilingual performances that explore stories from minorities living in Canada, their hybrid identities and cultural memories through a highly visual and physical language. CorpoLuz (Body’s Light in both Portuguese and Spanish) is about embodying and bringing to light stories otherwise untold , because the body “re-members” more than we think.

Land acknowledgement

CorpoLuz Theatre operates in T’Karanto, on Treaty 13 Land, which is governed by the Dish with One Spoon agreement. We are humbled by and grateful to all the original caretakers of the land, recorded or unrecorded, who came before us. We are committed to walking forward mindful of all those who are yet to come and in recognition that reconciliation cannot precede reparations.

Sensory description

Siranoush is a solo show, in which the performer uses different costume pieces (a fancy hat, a beautiful jacket) to denote various characters. These characters are also brought to life using different vocal ranges, accents, and languages. There is a large amount of dialogue, but movement is also very much used to tell the story.
The sound design ranges from 19th century waltzes to the soundscape of busy city streets to traditional Armenian music, featuring an instrument called the duduk.

It is also a highly multi-media show and the video projections serve multiple functions. They can echo a piece of text, translate it or present a poetic vision of what is being spoken about on stage. Flowers feature prominently in both the set design and the visuals.
