Runtime
50 minutes

A woman awash in sea-foam, a mysterious forest creature and a kooky flower bloom welcome you into nature's wild embrace. This sensational world of dance and poetry includes choreography by Margie Gillis. It asks how our bodies can act as sites of resistance and renewal in an era of environmental crisis. Featuring acclaimed 2SLGBTQIA+ writer and artist Hana Shafi (aka Frizz Kid), her poetry brings striking candour to cycles of power, decay, and rebirth.
“Griffin brought the forest to life in Loon...[Margie] Gillis' movement invention at its height, quirky and humorous with the darkest edge. -Los Angeles Dance Chronicle

More about the show and company

The artists of Body as Nature come together especially for this production. Caitlin and Hana met in 2024 during a curated evening of improvisational performance in Toronto. Following an immediate creative connection, Body as Nature marks their first formal collaboration, and will be just one of 3 dance shows in this year’s Fringe Festival. The production is directed by Brendan McMurtry-Howlett, whose previous credits include directorial work with The Shaw Festival.

Lighting and stage management are by Bharat N Vyas. The company would like to thank community supporters, Frog in Hand, The Railpath Arts Centre, Compañia Carmen Romero Flameno Dance Arts, and the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation, with special gratitude to Dr. Margie Gillis O.O.C., for her ongoing mentorship and without whom this show would not exist.

Land acknowledgement

We are grateful to move, create, and share Body as Nature on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral lands of the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ—including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomi—Haudenosaunee (Ho-de-no-sau-nee-ga), Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.

We honour the deep relationships between these Nations and this land, water, and more-than-human world. Their presence and stewardship continue to shape this territory.

As we explore the body as a living part of nature, we recognize our responsibility to engage in meaningful reconciliation—through listening, learning, and building reciprocal relationships grounded in respect, creativity, and care.
