Fringe Festival Next Stage Festival Outreach Volunteer Support About

Applications for Fringe 2010 are now closed.

FESTIVAL BACKGROUND
Founded in 1989, The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival is part of the global phenomena that has been bringing artists and audiences together in astonishing numbers for decades.  Last year’s attendance topped 60,000 to 1200 performances by 150 companies at 30 venues across Toronto, and we’re anticipating bigger crowds for 2010.  This two week celebration of Toronto resulted in over $427,000 returned to our participating companies, bringing our more than 20 year investment in our community to well above $4,000,000!

The core concept at the Fringe is accessibility, both to our artists and audiences, and for two weeks in July all of Toronto takes a moment to join the anarchy of the festival.  To make sure that you, the artist, can take the risks you need to take and tell the stories you need to tell, all Fringe shows are selected by lottery:  we’ll provide the infrastructure, you provide the art.

The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival is a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe ® Festivals (CAFF) and, as such, operates under the four guiding principles of CAFF:
• Participants are selected on a non-juried basis, through a lottery or on a first-come, first-served basis for Bring Your Own Venue applications
• 100% of the ticket price is returned to the artist
• Fringe Festival producers have no control over the artistic content of any show
• Festivals must provide an easily accessible opportunity for all audiences and all artists to participate.

Last year saw the launch of five artist friendly initiatives - make sure you take a look at other ways the Fringe can encourage your work here.

Good luck!
