A Mirror up to Nature
written and performed by Rodger Barton
directed by Keith Knight
Shakespeare wrote plays to become rich! He achieved his goal by holding the mirror up to the lives that his Elizabethan audiences lived.
Consisting of strolls through the London, a visit to the Globe Theatre, a bear baiting, a public hanging, a minister’s rant against the theatre, excesses at court, a prize at sea, smells of the day, medicinal mice, a thief’s scam, huge, hungry plague graves, naughty poetry, and speeches from Hamlet, Shylock, Henry and Jacques, “A Mirror up to Nature” reveals the world Shakespeare implored his actors to hold a mirror up to.
The world was filled with opposites: opportunity and danger, beauty and filth, hope and despair. Like all great artists Shakespeare’s work is complex. If actors are to do justice to Shakespeare’s characters, they must embrace this complexity through their craft. “A Mirror up to Nature” is for the actor in all those who love Shakespeare.

A Time to Dance
by Libby Skala
“Enter one actor cloaked in magic…Libby Skala is magnetic!” – NY Times (Lilia!)
A Jew and a Catholic have three illegitimate daughters in pre-World War I Vienna,
Austria.
One becomes an Oscar-nominated actress (Lili). One becomes a nurse and healer
(Lizi).
One becomes a creative modern dancer (Lisl). Meet Lisl, star of her own life.
While working on a play about her late Oscar-nominated grandmother actress Lilia Skala, Libby Skala attempted to interview her grandmother’s sister Lisl about Lilia’s girlhood. Instead, she discovered this fascinating creative modern dancer to be the dazzling and controversial star of her OWN life. While Lili says, “Why write an autobiography, we never tell the truth anyway,” Lisl’s honesty about her own life is intoxicating.
“The writing is superb, and Skala delivers a performance as well-crafted as you'll see at any Fringe.”– EYE (Lilia!)

Aladin Fun Fair
choreographer Souhair
Egyptian-style belly dancing. Rhythmic movement with a focus on fun with sound and colour.
The Souhair Dance Troupe’s speciality is Egyptian-style belly dance, but the choreography includes elements from ballet, jazz, Chinese, Spanish and Hawaiian dance; a fusion of style that reflects Toronto’s rich cultural mix. This year the focus is on fun with sound and colour as the dancers use musical instruments and special costumes to enrich their dance movements. The sounds of Egyptian zil (finger cymbals) and tambourines accent percussion rhythms, which are interpreted through body movement in the Cymbal and Tambourine Dances.
Flowing silk enhances the classic belly dance moves of the Veil Dance, and hip movements highlight the cabaret-style Oriental Dance. The dancer becomes a living candelabra in the traditional Candle Dance, and the Kaleege Dance from Saudi Arabia features distinctive, brilliantly coloured costumes, relaxed dance moves, and dramatic hair tossing.

Award-winning Plan-B Theatre Company (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) presents AMERIKA by Aden Ross.
AMERIKA is a world premiere examination of the relationship between money, power, lies and terrorism.
“a riveting, engaging, energizing drama….the cast and dialogue are razor-sharp” Deseret Morning News
“Unusually insightful.” Salt Lake City Weekly
“In Utah playwright Aden Ross' new work, receiving its premiere by Plan-B Theatre Company, three people find themselves imprisoned for unknown reasons. Locked in a spare cell, talk is the only tool to keep fear at bay. And so they keep talking, around, across and through their political divisions. Ross' dialogue is an intentionally wordy thicket, preoccupied with such pressing issues as unlawful incarceration, government spying, terrorism and the Iraq war
"a solid cast shapes people out of political stereotypes... AMERIKA reveals the narrative force that political theatre can be.” Salt Lake Tribune

Archie Andrews, what the hell happened?!
by Adam Sikora
Everyone’s flipped through an Archie (yes, that Archie) comic, even the non-‘comics’ people. Always the same friends and situations, right?
WRONG. Everybody has to grow up someday. Got a couple of theories yourself? Maybe how a certain triangle finally got resolved? Nuh-uh. They’re still in Riverdale, but that’s about it. Call the suits-here’s how it all went so very wrong…
Disclaimer-cherished childhood icon may or may not get pissed on.
It happened one fateful day in 1997. Clownfire Productions was born when its’ founders stumbled on the realization just how insanely funny the juxtaposition of two very common words could be. Since then, Clownfire has strived to make a tainted contribution to pop culture and general psychological trauma throughout Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. “Archie Andrews…” is Clownfire’s second Toronto Fringe Festival production. Ah well, maybe that third time really is the charm…

Art is a Cupboard
by Melissa Major
directed by Geoffrey Pounsett
They tell children’s stories. They write poems. They wear funny hats and ride tricycles. And they make Comrade Stalin very nervous.
In 1927, as the Red Fist tightens its grip, the last group of avant-garde artists in Soviet Russia is planning its bold, absurdist farewell. But with the world becoming even stranger than their own surreal visions, and their audience literally disappearing around them, is it still worth the risk?
Melissa Major’s darkly comic vision of the last days of the OBERIU intertwines the lives of its members with their art and nightmares, under the watchful eye of the mysterious Introduktor and the singing, slinking Chorus.
The winner of the 2004 York University President’s Prize and a current finalist in Reverie Productions’ Next Generation Contest in NYC, this poignant, (almost) true story is proudly presented by The Sweat Company - the force behind the acclaimed 2005 Fringe hit The Dispute.

Box Office - The Musical
book and lyrics by Tim Vant. score by Kevin Lau
directed by Jennifer Spry
A satirical look at a zany bunch of artists trying to find themselves in a world that seems less friendly with every step. Where hearts are broken and dreams are crushed daily the staff find hope in each other as they scrape together a meager living sporting bow ties and peddling tickets.
Will the dreaming and scheming, cajoling and backstabbing all pay off? Will any of them escape the demoralizing tedium of their lousy job and catch a break? Or will working for the in house oppressor stand in the way of any artistic advancement? At the Box Office, the lives being led behind the scenes are more dramatic than anything happening on the stage.
For anyone who's ever had a dream, and struggled to make it a reality, Box Office - The Musical will make you laugh, cry, and even sing!

Broken Record
by Alex Karolyi
directed by Alexandra Seay
There is music is this production but it is not a musical.
This site specific, experimental journey has people literally crawling up the walls. A record store employer and his employees try to make sense of the day, the night and the moments between. An apocalypse of sorts has settled. In one instance the world seems empty, and at another, chaos erupts.
Here, actuality is a figment of imagination, chosen by its creator. Each character has created a world of family, relationships, purpose and truth. The problem is – they are all liars. A toxic cycle, circles round and round and round and…Today is different. Something is different. Fast, a change is coming that will disrupt this spinning reality.
There is indeed an element of absurdity and an even stronger element of reality.

Cabbagetown Theatre Company’s 'Flat Busted at the Pour House' was written in a bar, performed in a bar, by a guy who should stop hanging out in a bar.
Two short comedic pieces about two sets of Canadian artists as they try to reconcile American dreams with Canadian opportunities. All of them think they can “make it”…they just don’t know how. All they can do is perform as often as they can. The reality that confronts them, though, is that performing doesn’t pay the bills. It Was Kit: The "True" Story of Christopher Marlowe
by Allsion McWood
directed by: Regan Macaulay
“It Was Kit: The ‘True’ Story of Christopher Marlowe”: What do we really know about Christopher Marlowe? We openly discuss Shakespeare, his celebrated contemporary, but what about the dark playwright who fell victim to one of the most murderous controversies of the English Renaissance? It Was Kit is a farce which examines the last week of Marlowe’s life, raising questions regarding the accuracy of history, the legitimacy of the Monarchy and the interpretation of the artist. Every character in the play existed in history: Thomas Kyd, Robert Greene, Ingram Frizer, Eleanor Bull, Richard Baines, William Shakespeare among many others.
Laced with actual, historical quotes and references, the play combines historical elements with the contemporary, drawing relevant comparisons between the two eras. This comedic twist on history suggests that Marlowe was a man as well as a phenomenon.
Murder and espionage have never been this much fun!

Living Shadows, A Story of Mary Pickford
written and performed by Tracey Power
directed by Brian Dooley
During the golden age of silent film, this Canadian fireball was the world's most celebrated actress. It’s been 12 years since Mary Pickford left the silver screen, but when presented with an opportunity to return, how could she refuse?
Sunset Boulevard - a new movie by up and coming director Billy Wilder. He thinks she’s perfect but what will her audience think? She's no longer the young sweet “Little Mary” they all remember; the young girl everyone loved and cherished as their own. Trapped in an image she has long outgrown, Mary gathers together all her films and memoirs in order to set fire to a lifetime of monumental achievement.
This powerful play tells one woman's story of determination, survival and her journey to that crucial moment, when an historical career may be lost forever.

Love Songs From Unlikely Places
by David Egan
directed by Charles Roy
The cadaver didn't mean to fall in love with the medical student who was dissecting him. He didn't mean to come to life at all, but with one touch of a scalpel to his heart, he found himself alive and in love and in no way able to recall who he'd been before. When his true love leaves him and (literally) takes his heart with her, he must negotiate his way through a world that speaks always from the heart. The checkout clerk in the grocery store begs him to rescue her, the bouncer outside a nightclub refuses to admit him because he's incapable of being loved, an ATM confesses to feelings of loneliness. The world seems strangely out of joint, but that's what love can do. Strange, sweet, and dreamlike, a tragedy for optimists and a comedy for pessimists.

Manners for Men

Two-for-one deals on extra-strength cocktails and clumsy machismo can end in a messy confusion of intentions where lack of communication isn't just an endearing sideshow. Throw in peer pressure and rampaging hormones and the rules of lad culture are hard to obey.
With the help of Victorian etiquette guides, a few lessons in how to talk the Queen’s English and a generous smattering of blokey bravado MANNERS FOR MEN takes a dive into gentlemanly behavior for the 21st century.
We all have an ideal of ‘manhood’…the difficulty is living up to it.

Requiem pour une âme seule
written and performed by Isabelle Barbat
Parisian choreographer and dancer Isabelle Barbat explores unnameable, unquantifiable
spaces, experiences that only poetry, in whatever form, can evoke. Her catalogue
of imagery, which, like a children’s song, accumulates new phrases every
time she repeats it, speaks simultaneously to supposed opposites.
Her body tightly framed by the dimensions of the simple yet monumental flat
that is only set piece, she writhes, evoking all of the ecstatic sensuality
and pain of martyrdom. Images of sexual ecstatic overlap with the brutality
of childbirth, and the experience of familial union becomes even more melancholy
when she sings “ Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child ” in her
stunning mezzo-soprano. Barbat’s exploration of physical space moves from
corpselike stillness through trembling vertical aspiration to fierce territoriality.
Open yourself and let her reconnect you with the suffering and beauty of daily
existence.

Lady Anne: rebellious cousin & bride to be; Elizabeth Woodville: hated sister-in-law and mother of the little princes in the tower; Cicely Neville, Duchess of York: beloved mother who cannot love her son; and arch-nemesis, the exiled former queen consort of the assassinated Henry VI: ‘Mad’ Queen Margaret?
Love, War, Murder, and Redemption: Richard 3, Queens 4: the deadly game.
A radical reworking of Shakespeare’s Richard III.
Cast: Françoise Balthazar, Lauren Brotman, Rosemary Doyle, Margaret Lamarre

Mary will not be wooed easily, she is still hurt and bewildered because of Jacob’s abrupt departure a year ago. She also has become engaged to the wealthy Jerome McKenzie. Mary thinks the past is best kept buried, but what will be dug up underneath this saltwater moon?
“This is a lovely play, lovingly written. We’ve not met the like of Mary and Jacob on any stage in many a long day. You’ll not soon forget them.” – Hollywood Drama-Logue

Scene 5
by Karl Trottier
Picture this: 4 men fight crime by writing themselves into a play. Simple enough, but here’s the twist - one is blind, one is deaf, one is mute, and one is quadriplegic. Kinda like the not so Fantastic Four with a twist.
Both Ends Burning is a tribute to all students who need to work full time to go to school full time, yet still find time to devote their time with special events, charities, and partying. They are all known to be burning the candle by both ends. Our answer to this statement is as such: Sure we’re burning the candle by both ends…but it’s a lot brighter!
Scene 5, the first production of Both Ends Burning takes us to what theatre has evolved to be. Theatre was first created to recreate history, share stories and folktales, and to control the masses. Scene 5 makes sure none of those prerequisites are followed and simply allows the audience, YOU, to sit back and be entertained and hopefully extract a chuckle or two.
P.S. it’s a comedy…and its funny!! Hope you enjoy!

Secondary Wishes
by Tom Kerr
directed by David Matheson
What would you have wished for in high school besides wishing to get out of high school?
Inspired by the story of “Aladdin” and set in a southern Ontario high school, “Secondary Wishes” is a comic musical piece capturing a satirical yet honest sense of the Canadian high school experience. When a magic lamp is discovered in the drama room of Courtice Secondary School, it triggers a sequence of events in which various familiar high school personalities struggle to achieve their wishes.
Examining the quintessential student complications surrounding identity, idolatry, companionship and the search for decent cafeteria food, “Secondary Wishes” is a rock/pop musical about the notion of coming-of-age in the world of daily McDeals, personal audio and Canadian Idol.

There isn’t great drama in all of our lives all of the time. The most drama I faced today was drinking a bad coffee and the climax was buying a new one. That’s it.
Red Tape Procession is an independent theatre company whose mandate is to create socially relevant and meta-progressive theatre.
Red Tape Procession is dedicated to acknowledging the total artifice of theatre while combining site-specificity with improvised and scripted elements and careful consideration of all technical and organic theatrical elements in hope to immerse our audience into the performance, creating a seamless transition between life and stage. Avoiding self-expression and catharsis while emphasizing the particular over the universal with an understanding that Right Now is culturally and historically significant and establishing an ongoing dialogue between art and artist and audience. Recognizing and embracing the absurdity of life and language and the musicality inherent in each. Rejecting the false bourgeoisie sense of classism prevalent among Canadian theatre audiences, critics and practitioners
It is our belief that we cannot force change in others but through the clear and earnest exchange of ideas, actions and emotions, can instill a sense of wonder and examination of one’s self and society and the relationships within, cultivating bit by bit by bit a networked community of energy and initiative.
